Empire Soundtrack Tops Billboard 200
Posted on March 24, 2015
The soundtrack from Fox's hot series Empire topped the Billboard 200 albums chart this past weekend. It sold 130,000 units for the week ending March 15, 2015. This kept it just out of reach of Madonna. Madonna's new album, Rebel Heart, sold 121,000 units. The Empire TV show has been gaining viewers each weekend so it is not surprising to have it top the charts. The show has nearly 20 million viewers according to its Live+7 count. The Empire series has run into some legal trouble of late. A record company named Empire Distribution is accusing the show of diluting their trademark. Fox has sued the company in response.
Another reason Empire topped Madonna could also be because Madonna's sales may have been partly subdued due to the fact that the album leaked online on two separate occasions.
Madonna's Rebel Heart album was followed by Luke Bryan's Spring Break...Checkin Out and the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack. Taylor Swift's 1989 came in at number five.
