Incredibly Hot Chili Pepper Discovered

Hot Chili PepperThe Associated Press reports that a man named Paul Bosland has discovered the hottest chili pepper in the world. The chili reaches 1,001,304 Scoville heat units on the Scovilli scale of chili hotness. The average jalepeno is just 10,000 Scoville heat units according to the AP. The AP says the new chili has been confirmed as the world's hottest by Guiness World Records.
The Guinness World Records agreed, confirming recently that Bosland, a regents professor at New Mexico State University, had discovered the world's hottest chili pepper, Bhut Jolokia, a naturally occurring hybrid native to the Assam region of northeastern India.

The name translates as ghost chili, Bosland said.

"We're not sure why they call it that, but I think it's because the chili is so hot, you give up the ghost when you eat it," he said.

Bhut Jolokia comes in at 1,001,304 Scoville heat units, a measure of hotness for a chili. It is nearly twice as hot as Red Savina, the variety it replaces as the hottest.
Even though they are still discovering new ones chili peppers have been around for a while. They even rocked the ancient world according to CNN.

Giant Roses in the Rose Parade

Tall RosesRoses that grow as high as 5-6 feet tall are going to be used in this year's Rose Parade. The roses are grown by OrganicBouquet.com on an Ecuadorian farm that lies between two volcanoes. Organic Bouquet claims they are the world's tallest roses.
The first certified sustainably grown flowers ever used in Rose Parade history, these magnificent red roses grow naturally 5-6 feet tall, each stem boasting a large head which opens to an astonishing four inches in diameter, creating a sea of lush red rose petals.

"These spectacular roses fit perfectly with the parade's theme, Our Good Nature," said Gerald Prolman, founder and CEO of www.OrganicBouquet.com. "The beauty of even the most stunning flower is enhanced when it is grown in a socially and environmentally responsible manner."

How do these roses get so big? A combination of natural factors have come together to create this extreme rose. At the equator, on an Ecuadorian farm, nestled between two volcanoes at more than 9,600 feet, Organic Bouquet's World's Tallest Roses enjoy days of prolonged sunlight and cool nights which allow these super-sized beauties to flourish beyond expectation.

These natural blooms are non-genetically engineered and are certified sustainably grown by Veriflora(TM), an international eco-floral certification standard that verifies social, environmental, ecological, and quality management practices.
You can read more about the roses here on the Organic Bouquet website. Information about the Rose Parade in Pasadena can be found here. In the parade the roses will be seen on the 89th Rose Queen, Mary McCluggage, as well as the Santa Fe Springs float.

OfficeMax Helps Transport Huge Rubberband Ball to Chicago

Giant Rubberband BallOfficeMax recently sponsored the transfer of a giant rubberband ball containing 175,000 rubberbands from a guy's garge in Oregon to downtown Chicago where the rubberband ball was cerrtified as the World's Largest Rubberband Ball by Guinness World Records. Some of the details are included below in a snippet from the press release.
"We're delighted to have been invited to the event to certify that Steve Milton's rubberband ball has broken the world record," said Guinness World Records official Sarah Wagner. "Congratulations to Steve and OfficeMax on this accomplishment."

OfficeMax transported the World's Largest Rubberband Ball in early November from Milton's garage in Oregon to downtown Chicago for the ceremony. Wagner confirmed that the OfficeMax-sponsored rubberband ball -- created by Milton with help from his 6-year-old son, Bryce -- broke the previous world record of 3,120 pounds. The 26-year-old Milton, who started his ball in November 2005 with a number of small OfficeMax rubberbands, says the ball now contains 175,000 individual rubberbands. The rubberband ball stands 5 1/2 feet-high and has a circumference of 19 feet. A rubberband ball is the corporate icon of OfficeMax.

OfficeMax is sponsoring Milton as part of its kick-off of a nationwide remodel for OfficeMax retail stores starting with 11 Chicago-area locations. The renovated OfficeMax stores feature a new, easy-to-shop layout that offers an in-store cafe with WiFi connectivity, a computerized Ink Refill station, a technology hub where consumers may try out the newest electronic devices, and other shopping amenities.
OfficeMax really had no choice but to sponsor the enormous rubberband ball. They use a rubberband ball as part of their corporate identity. Imagine how bad it would be for OfficeMax if Staples or Office Depot had the World's Largest Rubberband Ball?

World's Largest Smoothie Created in Canada

Worlds Largest SmoothieWe've been waiting patiently for someone to make an enormous smoothie and it has finally happened. The Booster Juice store in Kitchener, Canada broke the world smoothie record with a massive 195 gallon smoothie.
After 7 blenders, 3.5 hours of blending and over 195 gallons of smoothie, a Booster Juice store in Kitchener, Canada broke the current record for the World's Largest Smoothie. To break this record Booster Juice had to surpass the previous record of 333 litres or 88 gallons of delicious smoothie. City firefighters were on site to help in the attempt to enter the Guinness World Records by making the world's largest smoothie. Best of all, Booster Juice raised $1,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society by selling the world's largest smoothie in 24 oz cups after the record breaking event.
The firefighters may have been present because of the infamous Snapple popsicle disaster. The Snapple disaster occured last year when Snapple decided a hot July day in New York City would be a perfect time to attempt to break the record for the world's biggest popsicle. Fortunately, everything went as planned at the world's largest smoothie attempt.

World's Largest Free Floating Soap Bubble Created

John R. Erck, a 20 year old entrepreneur, has set a Guinness World Record for the World's Largest Free Floating Soap Bubble. The soap bubble was created using Beeboo Big Bubble Mix. The press release says the record breaking bubble event was attended by two PhD scientists who apparently had nothing better to to do than witness a soap bubble world record.
A team of PhD scientists gathered in Farmington, Minnesota in October 2005 to provide 100% accurate documentation to the Guinness World Records committee. The team was comprised of Dr. Monte Ramstad, a pioneer in fully synchronized 3-dimensional digital photography, and Dr. Fadil Santosa, a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Ramstad photographed the bubble with a series of synchronized cameras located at predetermined angles and measured focal lengths while Dr. Santosa determined the volume of the bubble using various mathematical functions.
Dr. Santosa must be pretty good at calculating the volume of bubbles considering this bubble is hardly a perfect circle and has odd bulges. Here are a couple cool facts about the big soap bubble.

  • If the bubble was filled with water it would total 788 gallons and weigh 3.2 tons!
  • 13,627 baseballs would fit inside!

Even cooler is the fact that soap bubble master John R. Erck was wearing sunglasses and wielding two bubble wands while creating the record breaking bubble.

Blog Tracks Craig Biggio's Painful Record Attempt

Houston Astros player Craig Biggio is closing in on the painful record for getting hit by the most pitches in Major League Baseball. Biggio has been hit by a pitch 268 times which leaves him just 20 away from the all-time record holder Hughie Jennings, who was hit by a pitch 287 times during his career. A blog called Plunk Biggio is tracking Biggio as he closes in on the record. Plunk Biggio informs us that Craig Biggio has been hit by a pitch 4 times on the release weekend of a new Harry Potter novel. Since Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is out this weekend maybe Biggio will get plunked by another pitch?

Snapple's World Record Attempt Ends in Sticky Mess

Snapple picked the middle of summer to try and break a Guiness World Record for the largest popsicle ever. Unfortunately, the 25-foot-tall popsicle melted before it could even be unloaded off the truck. CNN has a video of the giant melting popsicle. MSNBC.com has a report and picture of the gooey disaster as the enormous kiwi-strawberry treat melted and flooded part of downtown Manhattan.
The 25-foot-tall, 17.5-ton treat of frozen Snapple juice melted faster than expected Tuesday, flooding Union Square in downtown Manhattan with kiwi-strawberry-flavored fluid that sent pedestrians scurrying for higher ground.

Firefighters closed off several streets and used hoses to wash away the sugary goo.

Snapple had been trying to promote a new line of frozen treats by setting a record for the world's largest popsicle, but called off the stunt before it was pulled fully upright by a construction crane. Authorities said they were worried the thing would collapse in the 80-degree, first-day-of-summer heat.
The New York Post reported that the sticky kiwi-strawberry flood even caused several bicyclists to wipe out.
"I can't believe this, it's so dangerous," said cyclist Dave Currente, who took a nasty tumble.

The Fire Department raced to East 17th Street between Broadway and Union Square East to hose down the super-slick road menace.
The Post had the best headline for the incident with Snapple Slips Up In Ice-Pop Flop. MSNBC.com's headline read Disaster on a Stick. Other headlines about the Snapple PR disaster that we liked include:
