Britney's Dad to Remain Conservator

A court has ruled that Britney Spears' father, James Spears, will remain her conservator through the end of the year.
Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner Reva Goetz will continue Jamie Spears' conservatorship over his famous daughter through for the rest of they year. "Regarding the conservatorship of the person, I understand that Ms. Spears is reluctantly agreeing to extend those letters," Goetz said. "We are extending them until Dec. 31, 2008." A status hearing for the extended order has been set for Oct. 28.

"All orders remain in effect," Goetz said, before delivering some good news for the apparently reluctant songbird. "The order is without prejudice and is subject to early termination."
That means if Britney continues to show signs of improvement in her life and demonstrates an ability to manage her own affairs, the conservatorship may be ended sooner. But somehow we're not so sure that Britney is ready to take control of her own finances again. Not yet, anyway.

Britney's New Album

TMZ reports that Las Vegas club owner George Maloof is helping Britney Spears produce her new album.
Our sources say the album is being recorded at Maloof's Palms Casino in Las Vegas. We're guessing former manager Larry Rudolph, who's been back in the picture for a while, is producing the album. Maloof is trying to extend his long arm into the music biz -- and is also behind Ali Lohan's upcoming album.
You know, it's been so long since we've seen Britney out buying random things at the drugstore, eating Cheetos and clubbing that we'd almost forgotten about those incidents. Well, almost. Here's hoping that she stays healthy and that the new album is amazing.

Britney on the Comeback Trail

Photo of Britney Spears and Neil Patrick Harris

Britney and Neil Patrick Harris take a break from filming her second appearance as the receptionist Abby on How I Met Your Mother. She's looking good and reportedly was easy to work with. Could this really be her comeback? It's looking more and more likely.

Britney's Dad In Control Until Summer

Britney Spears' father Jamie will be her conservator until July, according to a new court ruling. He will be paid compensation of $2500 a week and is allowed to lease a car.
A court has ordered the troubled pop star's estate to pay James Spears' $2,500 in weekly compensation and authorized him to lease a car. On Wednesday, his authority to handle his daughter's affairs, which was scheduled to expire March 10, was extended until July 31.

Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner Reva Goetz ordered the weekly payments in documents released by the court Thursday but signed on Wednesday. James Spears, who recently worked as a caterer, was named conservator of his daughter and co-conservator of her estate after she was hospitalized twice in January.

Goetz also ordered Spears' estate to make a $58,800 payment to Samuel D. Ingham III, the court-appointed attorney who represents Britney Spears in the conservatorship case. She also authorized the pop star's psychiatrist to hire two other doctors and pay them retainers totaling $9,000 from her estate.

An attorney for James Spears, Vivian Thoreen, argued in court documents that the extension of the temporary conservatorship was necessary because Jon Eardley, an attorney who made an unsuccessful attempt to move the probate case to federal court last month, had filed additional papers in U.S. District Court. Those documents were under seal.
The commissioner was reportedly impressed at the improvement in Britney's behavior and health since her dad took over. We think the amount he's being paid is fair: it's a nightmarish, 24/7 job. And he seems to be really helping her.

Britney Can See Her Children

TMZ reports that Britney Spears will be allowed to see her children again, in a supervised setting. Her dad helped arrange the visit and K-Fed didn't object so long as there are precautions to keep the children safe.
[L]awyers for both sides have agreed to visitation in a therapeutic setting. Now we've learned the specifics. The kids can visit with momma, provided Jamie Spears and her psychiatrist are present. There are other strings, but at a minimum Jamie and the shrink are required.

We're told both sides are impressed that Jamie has stabilized Britney and the whirlwind surrounding her crazy life, and that's a core reason why a deal was struck.

Sources say Britney will begin seeing her kids again imminently.
The judge extended the restraining order against Sam Lufti: he can't even talk to Britney. She's been better lately, taking her medications and keeping to a sane schedule. Things are better without Sam drugging her, that's for sure. Kudos to her parents for doing everything they can to save her life. We hope Britney can keep it up.

Judge Denies Motion to Move Britney's Case to Federal Court

A judge has denied an effort by Sam Lufti to move Britney Spears' conservatorship case out of the California state courts and into federal court on the grounds that Britney's civil rights are somehow being violated.
U.S. District Judge Philip Gutierrez ruled the claims "may not arise under federal law" and indicated that not all necessary supporting documents were submitted, according to court papers. Gutierrez did give attorney Jon Eardley, who sought to move the case in Spears' name, until Feb. 29 to demonstrate why it should not remain in state court.

Spears, 26, has been hospitalized twice since early January for psychiatric evaluation and earlier this month, a Los Angeles court gave temporary control -- also known as conservatorship -- over her business and personal affairs to her father, Jamie Spears, along with attorney Andrew Wallet. If the case were moved, Jamie Spears could lose temporary conservatorship, which now extends until March 10.

Last week, Eardley filed papers seeking to move the case to federal court on the singer's behalf, but it remains unclear exactly who hired Eardley. The lawyer's spokesman, Michael Sands, also represents Sam Lutfi who was Spears' manager until the conservatorship was granted, and Sands has said he was "not at liberty to discuss" who hired Eardley. A temporary restraining order has been issued against Lutfi to keep him away from the singer. In separate court documents, lawyers for Jamie Spears called Eardley's filings "a brazen -- but vain -- attempt to strip a probate court" from extending the conservatorship.
Unfortunately the federal judge gave Sam's attorney's until the 29th to add the appropriate documents they failed to attach to their pleadings. This entire motion is outrageous. Sam Lufti is the one who has been feeding Britney mixes of drugs, according to sworn declarations in the state court case. Britney's parents are trying to save her life. To try to move this case to federal court on a civil rights basis is a disgusting move by Lufti to take back his control over Britney and her money.

Britney Spears Taken to UCLA Psych Ward

Britney Spears has been committed to the UCLA psych ward early this morning. No one knows exactly what prompted the involuntary commitment, but under Californian law she would have been deemed a danger to herself or others. Her psychiatrist arranged to have her taken to the hospital. Her parents are there and are fighting with Sam Lufti for medical power of attorney.
Britney Spears's latest trip to the hospital appears to be turning out much differently this time: The pop star went willingly, and she's "more comfortable" receiving medical care – even making a joke about her second trip, a source close to the pop star tells PEOPLE.

"She'll be in there for at least 72 hours getting evaluated. She might even stay longer," says the source. "She's more comfortable this time, she came into the waiting area, had a cigarette, made a joke about being there again. But who knows what will happen. All we can hope for is that she gets better."

Even the logistics in getting her help and getting her to the hospital were planned better – and far in advance, according to the source.

"Something like this has been in the works since the [last trip to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center]. She has been seeing her psychiatrist every day," the source says. "No one thought this would happen this soon, but it was clear if she stayed up for more than three days she'd have to get sent, since that could cause real damage. The last time she slept was Saturday."
Britney's problems can't be solved in 72 hours. She needs months of help, if you ask us. And unless she's violent on an ongoing basis, there is no way to force an adult to seek treatment. No doubt she'll get bored at the hospital and demand to be let go, with the help of her lawyers. This is a very sad situation.

Britney Loses Visitation Rights

Britney Spears has now temporarily lost her visitation rights with her two sons. This time, she didn't give the drug testing people her phone number so they could call before they popped in for some random drug tests.
During a closed-door emergency hearing Wednesday, Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner Scott Gordon suspended Spears' visitation rights until she complied with his full custody order, which includes parenting sessions and random drug tests. The decision has devastated the singer. "She's really upset," a source close to Spears tells E! Online. "She keeps saying, 'I can't believe this is happening.' It's like she just can't accept what's happened."

A second source familiar with the ongoing custody tug-of-war tells E! Online Federline was so angry when the children came back to him after their last visit with Spears two days ago he vowed to do whatever it takes to keep his ex-wife from seeing their babies again until she cleans up her act. "She just doesn't take parenting seriously," the Federline insider says. "And Kevin knows it. He keeps saying he's genuinely scared for their safety." And not even a court-ordered monitor has changed that. "He knows that even with monitored visits, no one can make Britney do what she doesn't want to do," the source adds. "She's used to telling people what to do, pushing people out of her way. She's a hard woman to control."

Federline was convinced Spears wasn't living up to her maternal responsibilities after the kids came back to his house crying and surly. "They came back to his house, and their eating schedule was off, their sleeping schedule was off, and they won't listen to him, because he knows they haven't been getting any discipline at her house," the Federline associate claims. "He has to start all over, getting them settled again, calm them down and reintroduce them to their normal schedules. And it's frustrating for him. He's been tolerating this for a long time, but he thought maybe it would get better with a monitor involved. It hasn't."
She let reporters overhear her calling the judge "an old fart," which is probably not the smartest legal move. Britney doesn't appear to be taking the judge seriously. It seems that she's been out of control for so long now that she thinks she doesn't have to obey the judge's orders. Well, she does -- if she ever wants to see her kids again. Maybe she doesn't. After all, she's not putting any effort into compliance. All she seems to do is go to Sunset Tan, Starbucks and McDonald's.

We Can't Handle Britney's Truth

Britney Spears and Kevin Federline on Chaotic Ok, we'd seen Nick and Jessica on Newlyweds. And that worked. But in Britney and Kevin: Chaotic's first hour, Britney herself wielded the digital recorder on just about everyone but herself. Frankly, the first fifteen minutes were boring. Then it got a little more interesting as Britney filmed paparazzi trying to get shots of her and she started to ask some of her assistants personal questions. Surely now she's going to talk about her beauty routine, exercise routine or practice some dance steps? Apparently not.

Britney has an appealing sweet side to her that does come through on the show. She doesn't seem spoiled or mean. Just unbelievably silly. But we think CNN's Tucker Carlson got it right. When asked what he thought about Britney after he interviewed her, he replied that he just couldn't get past how very young she seemed. In these home movies, she acts and sounds like she's about 14 years old (there were endless shot of her filming up her own nose, or making pig faces). There were some interesting clips of her getting ready to go on stage -- she is clearly completely fearless when it comes to performing -- and a total pro. When it gets really hard to watch is when he appears and by he we mean Britney's now-husband, then crush -- the absolutely ghastly and horrifically lazy Kevin Federline -- who takes longer to get ready in the morning than the world's most famous pop idol. He's taciturn. He's grumpy most of the time. He "doesn't believe in marriage" (no doubt that's what he told poor Shar Jackson). But most surprising of all -- he's a redneck with a horrible southern accent, which is really weird considering that he was born in Fresno, California. ("Payba-a-ack's a biatch, Britnaaaaaaay" he drawled when she filmed him in the shower.) A redneck, no good, two-timing, freeloading gigolo. Our heads are starting to hurt now.

Tony, Britney's bodyguard took an instant dislike to the Foul Federline and wasn't shy about saying so on camera. The scenes from next week show the large Tony squashing K-Fed into the floor like a bug, which made us very happy.

The most striking thing about the film is Britney's naïveté and immaturity. She is the opposite of her fearless stage personality. She appears vulnerable and desperate for anyone's affection. She also seems unaware that at the time these videos were shot Foul Federline's girlfriend Shar Jackson was at home in California, pregnant with K-Fed's second child. We wanted to stop the tape and yell "Britney what are you thinking? He's a snake!" But it's far too late for some sage dating advice -- and that's what made it hard to watch. Britney's continual burping and incessant exclamations of "Ya'll I'm such a dork!" weren't easy to bear, either.

Ok, fine, it's a train wreck. We'll tune in next week -- but only to see the Foul Federline get squished by Tony.
