Heidi and Spencer Elope?

Us Weekly announced that Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt eloped to Mexico and the couple issued a statement to the press about the nuptials. No family members were present and it appears that the marriage may not have been legally binding. So what happened? People reports:

Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt didn't invite family or friends to their Cabo San Lucas wedding, but everybody will be able to see it -- on The Hills.

"MTV is currently filming Heidi and Spencer in Mexico, as we were expecting to capture them on vacation," the show's executive producer, Liz Gateley, tells MTV. "Fans will be able to see the exclusive footage from the ceremony in an upcoming episode, and we will continue to follow the newlyweds' relationship as it plays out in real life."

It wasn't clear whether the show filmed the actual ceremony or obtained footage from another source. The Hills is on a break, and the footage will air in the series' upcoming fifth season.

Apparently the U.S. does not recognize foreign marriages for U.S. citizens unless certain formalities are followed, which Heidi and Spencer did not follow. They would have to have another wedding with a license in the U.S. later for it to be legal. We think. It's all rather murky right now. That means we'll have to tune in to see what really happened.
